William Stone developed an appreciation for the natural environment while growing up on the coast of New England. After living in various parts of the country, he settled in New Mexico in 1989. William specializes in documenting the landscapes and ancient cultures of the American Southwest. He travels the Four Corners country in an effort to record the often fleeting moments when light and form converge to evoke the beauty and drama of the region.

William's images have appeared in magazines, calendars, and other media produced by New Mexico Magazine, Arizona Highways, the Archaeological Conservancy, the New Mexico Bureau of Geology, and others. Westcliffe Publishers published New Mexico: Then & Now, a coffee-table book of repeat photography comprising 115 then-and-now pairs of historical images matched with William's modern-day photographs taken from precisely matched camera locations. Other books featuring his work prominently include Along New Mexico's Continental Divide Trail, New Mexico's Continental Divide Trail: The Official Guide, and Albuquerque: Spirit of the New West. Numerous other Southwestern-subject books utilize William's stock imagery.

Fine art prints of William's work have been exhibited at venues such as the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture (Santa Fe, NM), the Governor's Gallery (Santa Fe, NM), the Kolb Studio (Grand Canyon National Park, AZ), the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science (Albuquerque, NM), and the Museum of the Southwest (Midland, TX). His images have also been used for posters, documentary films, slide shows, and advertising.

William uses his photography to support many environmental and educational organizations, including the Solstice Project, the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance, and the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance.

William holds degrees from Bowdoin College in Maine and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in California.
